Taste of the Nation

Last night we took part in the Taste Of The Nation event. This event gathered together the area's top chefs, restaurants and culinary schools all to raise funds to end childhood hunger in America and in Charlotte. The night was filled with samplings of great food, as well as fine wines, beers and premium spirits.  I also had the opportunity to mix my own cocktail at the Mixologist bar.  There was also a silent auction where you could bid on some great items from tickets to sporting events to gift cards for some local restaurants (I bid on the Ikea gift basket, and won).  This annual benefit for Share Our Strength’s “No Kid Hungry” campaign began in 1988. The first event raised nearly $250,000 in a single day.

At the event, we served up our Crab and Goat Cheese Guacamole as well as our Carnitas 1511; petite pork shanks, marinated then flash-fried, and topped with a salted caramel sauce. At last years Taste of the Nation, the Carnitas 1511 won “Best Hot Food”. If you have ever had them, you understand why. Chef Vince Giancarlo, Chef Sigifredo Ortiz, and East Blvd’s General Manager Vince Ponzio took the helm at the Cantina 1511 table. We also doled out samples of one of our most popular signature margaritas, the Orange Tijuana Taxi as well as our Cilantro and Serrano infused Finlandia Vodka Bloody Mary.

We are so grateful to have been part of such a fantastic event for such a wonderful cause. To find out more about Share our Strength's mission and how you can help please visit theme here.

Nick Shaw will be performing tonight at our Stonecrest location near Ballantyne. This will be the first time Nick will be preforming at Cantina 1511 and we could not be happier.  It's no wonder that Heist Brewery in NoDa dubbed him "Charlotte's Biggest Voice."

Make sure you go to his website, Nick Shaw Music and check out some of his videos. His cover of "House of the Rising Sun" is unreal.

Hopefully, we will be seeing more of Nick at both our East Blvd. and Stonecrest locations, as well as our Park Road location opening Summer 2014.

The Charlotte Observer's annual Tournament of Food enters its seventh year, and we could not be happier. This year, the focus is on Charlotte’s best appetizer. And we were nominated for our Sidewalk Antojitos. While our guacamole was voted #5 in the nation, we love that our Sidewalk Antojitos were nominated. Antojitos literally translates to “little cravings” and we could not agree more. Our antojitos, as well as our Chefs are inspired by the rich street food culture of Mexico City.

Variety is the spice of life you, never know what you are going to get, since the chefs create a new antojito every day.  One day it could be pig wings, black bean nachitos, oaxaca wrap, and fried plantains. The next day it’s four completely different options, with a bonus of each restaurant doing their own thing.  The antojitos that our Dilworth (East Blvd.) location have, are completely different than our Ballantyne (Stonecrest) location.

You can read about the current tournament here and check out our events calendar updated daily with the Antojitos. Stop in to either location to try our antojitos today, and don’t forget to vote.
